free jazz
A cacophony
of tormented
guttural cries
emerges endlessly from his pipe
the blowing is frantic
vigorous
hysterical
sprays of sound
splinter
in the open evolving structure
assaulting the senses
& in the innumerable
layered rephrasings of the alto chords-
a rich architecture
soon
forms:
It is about
nothing
& everything
a frenzied splintering of meaning
the inexplicable somehow becoming clear
It is about
love
death
beauty
anger
truth
joy
bewilderment
awe
&
all spurting,
spluttering
from his
white
plastic
horn
'free jazz' (2001) first appeared in Pixel Papers. It was a tribute to some of the jazz musicians I was listening to at the time, including Ornate Coleman, John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy.
